NRHA NEWS What's Your Gut Telling You? I don't know about you, but I rely on my gut to help me make decisions. Experience has taught me to listen to it when it comes to interpreting a person's character traits, deciding if I should do a deal or pushing forward to do a deal. I trust my gut, but I also depend on research for gut checks—and to find trends and indicators that I hadn't considered. The reality is that the results aren't always exactly what I expect (or what my gut is telling me). Surprising research leaves me with a facts-versus-gut conversation in my head. What is the data really saying and what should I do with the analysis? As an independent retailer, in many cases, you have grown up in your business, so you know what I am talking about. If you're anything like me, you'll make a decision that takes into account both your instinct and research. Research is expensive, so if we invest in it we shouldn't and can't ignore it. Most business owners tell me they are searching for relevant data and trends to help them make the best business decisions for long-term growth. Many of us try to gather as much research as possible whenever and wherever we can. NRHA commissions proprietary research with your concerns in mind. The association has the knack for taking research and translating it into everyday business terms to help you interpret what it means for your business' potential growth. So, my gut is telling me that NRHA's State of Independents Conference on Dec. 10 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Chicago is the place the industry should meet to learn about relevant data, trends and analysis for the home improvement retail marketplace. For more information about NRHA's State of Independents Conference, or to register and take advantage of discounted early-bird registration rates, please go to www.hardwareretailing.com/soic.
